What are the various authentication methods I can use to access eResources?
Answer
Carnegie Mellon University affiliates can access licensed electronic resources through various authentication methods, using their Andrew ID + password and Duo Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). Below are common methods and descriptions to help you find what you need.
-
Databases, eResources, and Tools A-Z list
Curated by the University Libraries’, this list is your best bet to ensure seamless access (on-campus and remotely) to library resources. Resource links are optimized with the best authentication method (usually OpenAthens or EZproxy, as described in detail below).-
OpenAthens (https://www.openathens.net/)
OpenAthens is an identity and access management service that provides modern single sign-on (SSO) technology that offers easy remote access to library resources. Many publisher sites/platforms promote an ‘Institutional Login’ option. Choose 'OpenAthens' and select 'Carnegie Mellon University Libraries' -
EZproxy (https://www.oclc.org/en/ezproxy.html)
EZproxy is a hosted OCLC product/service that provides authorized CMU users with remote access to subscription resources.

IP Address
Users that are physically located on CMU’s Pittsburgh campus within designated IP addresses/ranges are able to gain access to library electronic resources. *CMU users on campuses outside of Pittsburgh (Qatar) within designated IP addresses/ranges are able to gain access to electronic resources as individual resource licenses permit. -
Virtual Private Networking (VPN)
Connecting to CMU VPN will grant access to most library electronic resources. Using this method connects a user to a CMU based campus IP address/range as if you were on the physical campus. A few select electronic resources offer this method as the only way to access their resource. See VPN instructions. -
Username/Password
A few resources rely on username/password authentication. The subject librarian is generally listed as a contact on the A-Z list for these unique resources, or you can contact us for help.
